Project Description

Best Of | Issue 05 | Spring/Summer 2026

In early spring Neue Werkstätten celebrated alongside with Thonet and Jil Sander as a special guest the new pieces in the JS . Thonet signature collection.

The designs remain loyal to their creative, artistic appearance, and thereby attain a brand-new kind of sensuousness: through refined new surfaces, precisely-focused colours and an extraordinary quality of materials. The latest models of the collection can be experienced at Neue Werkstätten as part of their constantly changing showcase.

Bauhaus design carried to the next step, consequentially

Ranging from the iconic free swingers S 32 and S 64 over the Lounge Chair S 411 all the way to tables S 1070 and B 97, Jil Sander shows in imposing manner in her interpretation of the Thonet steel-pipe classics just how classic Bauhaus designs can be developed further, consequentially true to original principles. Reduction. Precision. And a particular sensitivity for materiality. All these stamp the design of the collection.

The two clearly differentiated design lines SERIOUS and NORDIC each set their own accents: whereas SERIOUS unveils a markedly elegant identity with dark-hued surfaces in high-lacquered form and deep leathery colours, NORDIC interprets the designs through pale, gold-shimmering finishes, bright and warm wooden shades exercising admirable restraint.

Timeless, precise, premium value

Through the presentation of the JS . Thonet Signature Collection, Thonet returns permanently to the portfolio of Neue Werkstätten. It is a partnership founded on the self-same values: timeless design, precision hand-craftsmanship and premium materials. Pursuant to the guiding light of a dialogue being carried on between past and future, the three partners combine and interlace tradition with curiosity and lust for novelty – with the claim to make designs not merely as style, but rather as an attitude, a posture.

Neue Werkstätten

Neue Werkstätten have their roots in “Vereinigte Werkstätten für Kunst im Handwerk“ (United Workshops for Art in Craft), an association of architects, artists, and craftspeople founded in 1898 that helped pave the way for modern German design. In its current transformation, Neue Werkstätten is reflecting on its history, building on its founding principles, and carrying them forward into the future in a contemporary way. It positions itself as an institution of design culture — a forum that brings together retail, planning, and consulting within a comprehensive service offering. Its portfolio addresses both private clients and professional planners, ranging from furniture by international premium brands and emerging labels to textiles, lighting, curated accessories, and art, as well as materials, paints, and tiles. With kitchen solutions and extensive interior design expertise from Molteni&C, alongside high-end bathroom concepts, living spaces are now conceived and designed holistically.

Thonet – the Enterprise

Since 1819 Thonet Möbel has manufactured pieces for private living and project zones. As a result of a particular passion for materials such as bentwood and welded steel tubing, the German manufacturer produces design icons such as the famous Coffee House Chair or Bauhaus Classics from the quill of Mart Stam, Marcel Breuer or Mies van der Rohe, as well as furniture pieces by renowned contemporary designers. The combination of highly modern production technology and traditional hand-craftsmanship is what turned Thonet into one of the most successful enterprises in the world. In the production works in Frankenberg, innovative products are generated, now as in olden days, which are always focused on long-enduring value. They distinguish themselves through the absolute highest quality, functionality and a timeless language of forms. Sustainability is rooted deep in the history of the company. Even the super-slender forms of the first bentwood by Michael Thonet were not remarkable merely from an aesthetic point of view, but rather as an expression of deep-seated understanding of resource efficiency. Thonet furniture is built for generations: it has an extremely long-life cycle and can be revitalized, on request, in Frankenberg.
