STREIFZUG Kitzbühel | Issue 58 | Winter 2025
In the heart of green nature where your gaze slithers over a silent swimming pond and the scent of old wood fills your senses, a small architectural composition rises up, appearing like an apparition.
The Octagon, an allegorical symbol of perfection, generates the geometric and spiritual substructure of this project. Like a stylized rose, which Christianity considers a symbol of new creation, nestled in the lap of nature, architecture here is emblematic for self-reflection, for the inward gaze directed towards things long forgotten, things which are simple, essential, everlastingly genuine. From the initial flame of an idea to the drafting/planning stage and onward all the way to the actual execution of a house constructed in wood and paired with very special interior furnishings, this project which emanated from the hands of Holzbau Maier has strived towards perfection. The ultimate result: a harmonious interaction of traditional hand-craftsmanship and timeless aesthetics linked together by a profound connection with nature.

The exterior walls are inner-constructed of wood, then panelled in old wood, then connected inside with white plastered walls and finely stringed, single-sided textile panels. The rooftop truss was implemented in tiled slabs inspired by the form of a water lily, lending the interior spaces a deep tranquillity. It is underpinned by the warm optical ambience of sun-scorched old wood. Spacious window surfaces outlined by charcoal-coloured frames open the room to outdoor nature and invite both the light and the landscape to become integral parts of the interior. The terraces are of larch wood, the oaken floors are laid in octagonal modules, the individually finished oaken furniture is a story of quality in itself, radiating perpetualness and a dedication to detail.

Regardless where you shift your gaze, from the textile stringed wall panels in the living zone to the oak/textile combination of the meticulously finished cabinets, each and every element adheres to the primordial credo of the house. The ROHO pond lodges are far more than luxurious guest suites, they are a priceless, irreplaceable refuge for body, mind and soul…and a soft-spoken homage to the beauties of simplicity.
