Best of Mallorca | 2018 Text: Renate Pentzien
Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival was founded by Sandra Seeling Lipski in 2012. Now in it’s 7th year EMIFF stays true to it’s mission; BRIDGING CULTURES – BRIDGING PEOPLE. Since it’s inception, the numbers of international and national films in the program, as well as ticket sales have quadrupled.
“My passions are movies and Mallorca!” Sandra, a Berlin native, grew up on Mallorca. After finishing school, she followed her dream to become an actress and moved to Los Angeles. “I wanted to tell my own stories and to have more creative control over my career so I started to produce my own films”. Her movies got accepted to several film festivals around the world and this is when she noticed that Mallorca was missing one very important thing – it’s very own Mallorca International Film Festival. “I never thought about it twice and founded it”. Since its 2012 inception, the number of films screened and tickets sales have tripled. EMIFF is the fastest growing competitive International Film Festival in the Mediterranean.
International and regional highlights
“Growing up on the island I established a deep appreciation for the Mallorcan people, culture and lifestyle.“ EMIFF showcases provocative, socially relevant and innovative filmmaking while positioning Palma as a global destination for a creative film community. Audiences and filmmakers attending the festival can expect top-quality programming of films, workshops and panel discussions. Sandra aims to enhance the vitality of independent filmmaking in the Mediterranean by playing local films along with the best being produced from around the world. “The Mediterranean cinema landscape and the thriving talent of its filmmakers deserve to be held to a higher standard – and audiences deserve to see great movies”.
Stepping stone of talents to Hollywood
In conjunction with its sister-screening event that showcases the festival’s winners in Hollywood, CA, EMIFF is becoming an international launching pad for promising new talents in all genres. “We are currently looking for creative, energetic film, art and culture enthusiasts to join our team, as well as new media partners and sponsors”. Sandra splits her time between Los Angeles and Mallorca, but every November she is on the island, that’s when the film festival takes place.
