What should prospective buyers consider when purchasing a yacht? Adrian Soos, Sales & Purchase Consultant at Ocean Independence, shares his insights.
Streifzug: Mr. Soos, the Mediterranean boat show season has wrapped up. Which types of yachts are currently in highest demand?
Adrian Soos: Every owner is different, of course. But in general, displacement yachts from 30 metres upwards with three to four decks are selling well. An open aft area with good access to the water and a large sundeck are key features.

Streifzug: What should first-time buyers pay attention to?
Adrian Soos: I always advise clients to start with a few charter trips on different yachts. It’s the best way to discover which size and style suit their lifestyle. As a rule of thumb, I recommend established brands – also with regard to resale value. Many owners tend to scale up over time.
Streifzug: Is a yacht actually a good investment?
Adrian Soos: A yacht is an investment in your own quality of life. Chartering can certainly offset part of the running costs, but a mega yacht will never be a business model. It’s something to be enjoyed.
