KITZBÜHEL | Issue 42 | Winter 2017 Text: Klaus Dörre
In those circles where luxury is defined as the utmost quality in every imaginable way, Klaus May has earned a certain renown. More than 160 exquisite Ibizastyle® villas and estates have been conceived, designed and realized over the last twenty years on the Spanish mainland as well as on Ibiza and Mallorca. His often quite prominent clients are served with absolute discretion from the launch of initial researches to find and purchase the most desirable piece of land, deal with the communal authorities, see to the requisite permits, all the way to planning, designing, constructing and supervising the building in the most meticulous, efficient and sensitive ways possible.
Klaus May in young years was a cabinet maker master, a restorer of famous historically listed projects and completed studies as an interior architect at the age of 26. He attained much success on the Spanish mainland with Fincastyle®. Today he lives and works in Jávea/Xàbia on Costa Blanca and on Mallorca.
Ibizastyle® created by Klaus May
In Ibiza the basic form for many of his houses is the iconic cube with new technology which he develops himself. For example, nearly invisible crevasses beneath windows and on terraces funnel rainwater into a utility water tank. Or a non-partitioned window wall can be soundlessly withdrawn into a double wall he devised.
“I accompany each step of the work personally, from the initial sketch to supervising actual construction,” illuminates Klaus May. He first hunts for the most suitable piece of land to build on, recommends and ultimately contracts the builder of the property on the coast of Mallorca, Ibiza or Costa Brava. “The client becomes owner of the land immediately, not later on when the building is handed over. All legal and building-permit relevant fundamentals are cleared up prior to purchasing the land,” the architect explains. Conception, sketched plans and final design are then developed and depicted in floor plans, views and 3D images.
Once the plans have been approved by the client, the listing of the costs involved is presented, the Ibizastyle® house is carried out. The interior is also designed and finished in May’s workshops. “All the materials we use, as well as our trained employees, are brought from the mainland to the islands. That is the only way such high quality standards can be guaranteed,” explains Klaus May. It is also the best way to make sure that every Ibizastyle® house is a custom-designed property built for the client alone.
