Project Description

Kitzbühel | Issue 54 | Winter 2023

Johann Eder, restaurant director and sommelier at the Rote Wand Gourmet Hotel, has a special recommendation on offer: Today we take a magic journey to beautiful southern Styria. Among connoisseurs this is a well-known epicentre of vineyard culture and winemaking, although quite under-represented on the world stage of recognized wines. Southern Styria dazzles wine lovers most of all because of the quality, not the quantities, based on climatic conditions and rigorous attentiveness to winemaking at its best.

This is showcased well by winemaker Jürgen Trummer. When Jürgen took over the vineyards at the tender age of 21, most people were not sure if it was a wise decision. Today it is crystal clear: it was ingenious and prophetic for this gifted winemaker to find his way to the spot he merits. Nowadays Jürgen numbers among the truly exceptional winemakers who create wines with a super-fine edge in utter harmony with nature, bearing the imprint of the land and the terrain as well as the grape variety he is coaxing to attain its pinnacle. His secret ingredient: patience. The wines which I want to spotlight today are the Welschriesling Alte Reben (“old vines”) and the Morillon Obegg. Both are crafted to a level which can only be described as world-class.
