Copenhagen is more than just a capital city – it is a singular way of life, a unique attitude. The Danish metropolis combines modern city living with close proximity to nature, Scandinavian laid-back style with deep-seated sensitivity for design which has inspired the entire world. That means bicycles instead of cars, maritime air to breathe in instead of hectic hustle and bustle and, as places like futuristic Nordhavn demonstrate, a prototype of how relaxing and visionary life in a big city can be.

The creative energy generated here is reflected everywhere: in timeless architecture, iconic furniture design and Concept Stores, as well as in the unique creations of labels such as Ganni or Cecilie Bahnsen. Design in Copenhagen is the polar opposite of luxury, it is an integral element of everyday existence – functional, reduced and at the same time exuding human warmth.

Also in the galaxy of fine dining, the city has set new, higher standards. As a result of New Nordic Cuisine, Copenhagen became a culinary metropolis of Europe. Between traditional Smørrebrød and highly innovative Michelin-star awarded restaurants such as Kadeau or Radio Restaurant, a type of food has been generated which is seasonal, creative but unmistakably Nordic, a brand new identity.

The exhibition “DANISH MODERN” at the Danish Design Museum illuminates the history of Danish design from 1920-2000.
Copenhagen inspires through great ideas as well as in tiny moments and in both spheres shows that outstanding design can evolve into a way of life.

Two of the best-known prime examples of Danish design are the Egg™ Lounge Chair and the Swan™ Chair by Fritz Hansen, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958.
